Accommodation

Whilst on the mountain, you will be sleeping either under canvas or, if you are booked on the Marangu Route, in dormitories in specially built huts. However, the price of the trek includes two nights - one before the trek, one after - at a hotel. The hotel on the night before the trek is booked  a B&B basis, whilst after the trek your accommodation is on a half-board basis.

Exactly which hotel you will be staying in depends to a certain degree on which trek you book. With some of the treks, however, you do have a certain amount of flexibility and choice as to where you stay. When you book your trek we will send you details of which accommodation options are available.

To give you an idea of the quality and type of  accommodation on offer, below we give you details of the accommodation we use in Arusha  - the base for all our treks on Kilimanjaro. We also provide a link, where possible, to the hotel’s website so you can find out more about the hotel.

The accommodation

Standard hotels

The following hotels are included in the price of the trek. Note that provision of such facilities as hot water and electricity can on occasions be erratic in this category, and certainly not as reliable as similarly priced accommodation in the West. In order to ensure a reliable hot water/electricity supply, clients may wish to upgrade to the hotels at the bottom of the page. .

Arusha Naaz

Though it doesn’t look much on the outside, the Arusha Naaz offers some surprisingly comfortable rooms in the heart of the action in busy Arusha. Each room boasts an e-suite hot water shower as well as colour TV; the restaurant is also one of the best in the town centre.

Le Jacaranda

One of the more charming mid-range hotels in Arusha, Le Jacaranda is an exquisite building surrounded by mature trees in a leafy quarter of the city. Decorated with murals done in the traditional tinga-tinga style, Le Jacaranda is a fairly small establishment of only 23 rooms, but has its own bar and highly recommended restaurant hidden in the foliage of the overhanging trees - with plenty of other top-notch restaurants nearby too.

Outpost

A long-established Arusha hotel set down a quiet and leafy lane just a few minutes from the clocktower in the centre of town, the Outpost is one of our standard-class hotels. Pleasant enough, with a small pool and bar, as with all hotels in this class the facilities can sometimes be temperamental, mainly because the power supply in Arusha is temperamental too. Some of the rooms feature hot water, and there are also internet hotspots in parts of the hotel.

L’Oasis Lodge

A mid-class upgrade, L’Oasis lies hidden behind the trees to the north-east of Arusha. A real hideaway, one of the main features of the hotel are the wild birds that stalk the grounds, from crowned cranes to spoonbills and even flamingoes! A cyber-cafe, pool and laundry service complete the facilities. With brooding Mount Meru in the background and rooms that are simply but tastefully furnished, and all en-suite, this is a pleasant escape from the bustle of Arusha, and a great place to unwind after your trek.

Impala Hotel

A large, business-class hotel just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre, the Impala always has a bustling, bubbling atmosphere. A large place with over en-suite 160 rooms, all with colour TV and 24-hour room service, as well as a pool, this is a fine, worry-free place to stay before or after your trek. Surprisingly. perhaps, one of the features that many clients appreciate is the 24-hour restaurant - ideal for those who’ve flown in late from Europe.

Moivaro Lodge

Another stunning establishment on the outskirts of Arusha, the Moivaro is situated on the grounds of an old coffee estate. Accommodation is in quiet cottages built around the grounds, each boasting their own veranda and all mod-cons. Swimming pool, internet facilities, massage room (essential for those post-trek aches!), all located in beautiful gardens, make this one of the top places to stay in Northern Tanzania.

Karama Lodge lies 3km along Old Moshi Road beyond Masai Camp, who actually own the place. An unusual lodge, the Karama is tucked away on a quiet hillside facing away from Arusha and boasts 22 stylish en-suite rooms housed in log cabins on stilts, with views of Meru from many. A sauna, massage and yoga room complete the facilities.

Kibo Palace This smart, swish place has changed its personality over the past couple of years. When it first opened it felt like a typical African businessman’s hotel - a little flash, a little ostentatious, and not particularly friendly. However, it’s actually fast becoming a staple of tour groups and we’ve had nothing but good reports from our clients who’ve stayed there. It’s also pretty central, situated between the restaurants and hotels by Le Jacaranda and the Arusha Hotel - which, as everybody knows, is located by the (spiritual, if not actually phyical) centre of Africa.

Arumeru River Lodge

Luxuriating in 12 acres of wonderfully manicured gardens, the Arumeru is one Arusha’s newest luxury lodges. Featuring 20 supremely comfortable rooms in 10 chalets, each with their own veranda, as well as a beautiful bar and reception area, this place has a fine pool, bar area, two restaurants and, best of all, views of both Meru and Kilimanjaro. All in all, a  wonderful retreat.

Arusha Hotel

Arusha’s oldest hotel, right in the centre of town next to the clocktower, the Arusha is one of those establishments that exude with history, having been first established in 1894. Now fully refurbished and updated, it retains much of its old colonial charm alongside the latest in comfort and luxury and continues to host the majority of VIPS visiting Arusha, including, recently, Bill Clinton.

Onsea House

The highest quality hotel we have on our roster, Onsea House is just about the best there is in northern Tanzania. Belgian-run, and with a chef in the kitchen who’s worked in Michelin-starred restaurants, this place is just splendid. When I first walked into the Onsea to check its facilities, my first thought was that this place - with its tranquil location 5km outside Arusha, its privacy and its facilities including swimming pool, jacuzzi pool room and ba - would be ideal for honeymooners, My second thought was that I needed to get married soon, so that I could enjoy spending my honeymoon here. It really is a delightful place, with just the right mix of formality and friendly informality. The only downside is the size, with just four rooms and a guest cottage available to guests - so we recommend you book this one fast!
